Mary Garoutte Fine Art is a multi-faceted proprietorship, offering fine art, live event painting, private art lessons & public workshops, art consultation and mentorship.

Please periodically check-in for updates on exhibitions, classes, painting events, mentorship services, and also part-time job opportunities, such as studio assistance & photography.

I  am an emerging visual artist based New Brunswick. Originally from Mesa, Arizona, it’s has been a long journey to find my artistic roots in Eastern Canada.

I studied painting at NSCAD University, Halifax, NS,  and majored in fine art (BFA 2004).  Since graduation, I have taught painting and drawing workshops to adults and children, notably the NSCAD School of Extended Studies. I have also had the opportunity to exhibit in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally.

Nowadays, I occupy my time between private art instruction and as a professional visual artist.

I have worked for about a decade painting the landscape, architecture & vernacular of Eastern Canada. Recently, I am shifting fro urban landscape into Symbolism and Magic Realism, with both its strong and subversive narrative and dreamlike quality.  I am a painter who has a photographic background, and interest in the medium of film and cinematography, which is reflective in my paintings in the pre-occupation with light, shadow, and dramatic and cinematic imagery. Major influences which I attribute the aesthetic of my work include Canadian Post-Impressionism, the American Ashcan School, Alex Colville, British figurative artist Lucian Freud, Surrealist artist Rene Magritte, American artists Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, as well as Canadian photographer Gregory Crewdson and film greats with a ‘painterly’ sensibility such as Alfred Hitchcock and Sergei Parjanov.

I accept public and private commissions.

I saw some of your work on Instagram after you “liked” one of my pics.

I would like to see more of your work.

I liked very much the painting with the bike on it. I live in London, UK

    My insta name is Gastricflu56

    Kind regards

    Michael

    • Greetings Michael!

Thank you for your interest in my work. I am delighted that you like the painting with the red bicycle in it. The bike is only one small part of the painting, as it is a cropping or detail of a larger work.

I would be happy to email you some images of my work. Unfortunately, I don’t have my web site completed yet, which will act as my online portfolio of past and present works. In the meantime, I use this blog, but eventually I will link it to the site, once it’s finished, which will hopefully tidy things up from the disparate nature in how the artwork is currently floating around from one social network to another..

      We will be in touch.

      Many Thanks,

      Mary

    HI,
I am interested in your painting morning light. Could you send me information and price at Beth-atherton@hotmail.com
    Thanks

    • Hi Beth,

Thanks for your interest in my painting “Morning Light”.
Unfortunately, this one has sold. I desperately need to update my blog. I have lots of new work to post as well.
Best thing is to contact or visit the website of Argyle Fine Art; (argylefineart.blogspot.ca), where I am represented. They have a lot of my paintings that are posted here on my blog, & will be able to tell you what is still available. I am also open to commissions. Feel free to send me a message if that would ever be of interest to you.

      All the best,

      Mary 🙂

Hallo Mary, is it possible and will the cold wax recipe still work if i used ordinary turpentine instead of genuine turpentine? Will it influence the drying time negatively for e.g.?

    • Hello and my sincere apologies for not responding to your question right away! I am barely using this blog anymore, as I am and have been in the midst of re-branding and building a website with a restructured/updated blog. It has been a long process, and I’m hoping to have this new project live on the web in the New Year.
Regarding the recipe for cold wax medium, regular turpentine will work just fine, the only difference between regular and genuine is that it is more processed, and therefore, may affect the drying time and performance a bit. I suspect it would dry out a little more quickly. However, the best advice with making CWM is to make small batches (so you don’t waste it by it drying out), as well as proper storage (ensuring it is in a tightly sealed glass jar at any time you are not using it). Hope this is helpful! All the best! Let me know how you make out with it!

    Greetings,
My name is Potter Dennis from SC. my wife have been on the lookout for some artworks lately viewing your website on my laptop and i guess she likes your piece of work, I’m also impressed and amazed to have seen your various works too, : ) You are doing a great job. I would like to receive further information about your piece of work and what inspires you. I am very much interested in the purchase of the piece (in subject field above) to surprise my wife. Kindly confirm the availability for immediate sales.
    Thanks and best regards,
    Potter .

    • Hi Potter,
Thank you for your message and thank you for enjoying my work. I’m glad that your wife also enjoys my paintings.
Regarding your inquiry about the artwork in the subject field, that is a detail from a painting that is part of a new series I just recently created that is based on dreams (actual dreams I have had). The painting is called “Night Bridge”, and I can certainly send you an image of the full painting, along with the new works. I have not yet had a chance to post the new work on my blog, as I am currently in transition with building a new website, which explains why this blog is quite outdated. I periodically only log in now when I have comments.
In the meantime, you can view the new series here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/62710153@N03/albums/72157696265120000

Unfortunately, “Night Bridge” has sold, but there are other available works from the series, as well as some older work still available at Argyle Fine Art in Halifax, and they do ship work internationally. Inquiries of price can be directed to them:
      http://argylefineart.blogspot.com/p/about-us.html

      I also accept commissions.
      Many thanks,

      Mary
