This blog post is aptly named, since it was the title for my painting exhibition last month.
I promised I would post the show online, so here are all 19 paintings. They are oil painted on birch panel mounted on cradleboard. I hate how trendy cradelboard is now, but alas; I hate canvas. Some of these are still available and still grace the walls of Argyle Fine Art.
AND….. (drum roll).. the other reason for posting this is to happily announce that I will be having another solo show at Argyle in spring 2014! Stay tuned for more info and works -in-progress (I promise to do it this time)..

I am a visual artist based in New Brunswick. Originally from Mesa, Arizona, it’s has been a long journey to find my artistic roots in Eastern Canada.
I studied painting at NSCAD University and majored in fine art (BFA 2004). Since graduation, I have taught painting and drawing workshops to adults and children, notably the NSCAD School of Extended Studies. I have also had the opportunity to exhibit in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally.
Nowadays, I occupy my time between working part-time as a private art instructor and part-time as a professional visual artist.
I have worked for about a decade painting the landscape, architecture & vernacular of Eastern Canada. Recently, I am shifting into Symbolism and Magic Realism, both sharing strong and subversive narrative and dreamlike subject-matter. I am a painter who has a photographic background, and interest in the medium of film and cinematography, which is reflective in my paintings in the pre-occupation with light, shadow, and dramatic and cinematic imagery. Major influences which I attribute the aesthetic of my work include Canadian Post-Impressionism, American Ashcan School, Alex Colville, British figurative artist Lucian Freud, Surrealist artist Rene Magritte, American artists Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Hopper & Grant Wood, as well as Canadian photographer Gregory Crewdson and film greats such as Alfred Hitchcock and Sergie Parajanov.

Always a pleasure to hear of your success’. I’m so proud of you. You’re practically a celebrity now. Folks from afar will soon be saying, “Halifax ??….hmmmm,… oh yes, that’s where the famous artist, Mary Garoutte is from”.

I guess the Lord has a great sense of humor since He chooses to do things in pairs or at least in ways that have us scratching our heads and thinking….. Wow, too much of a co-incidence.
The main thing is that He is alive & well and still blessing us to no end. It just makes Him happy to show us His love I guess.

I liked how you put it in your blog feature – that the works reminded you of Hopper’s. The isolated, yet mundane, everyday spaces and light he so well painted was something I had subconsciencly been influenced by at the time when I painted the ‘Post Cards from Home’ series. It was more evident to me later on as I kept painting this kind of subject-matter of this influence and how universal it is -not just Halifax streets and architecture; which was what I thought I was soley attracted to and after at the time I painted this body of work.
